In the late 1980s the Great Eastern Mainline services from Norwich to London were in the hands of Class 86 electric locos and rakes of MkII carriages (though the Mk1 Buffet cars soldiered on for many years after I think). Occasionally an EMU would make it up to Norwich (these normally reached no further than Ipswich). I think this particular shot was taken on a summer Saturday. I seem to remember that a Class 309 working into Norwich was quite rare - they were built for and associated with the Clacton route. At the time, electrification had just reached Norwich, and so these unfamiliar electric units seemed very exotic. I always had a soft spot for the Class 309s, which had a very attractive design.
